Meine Meinung
Kyle lebt in einem kleinen verschlafenen Ort in dem einfach nichts passiert, nicht einmal Handyempfang gibt es dort. Damit zumindest einmal im Jahr etwas passiert, gibt es den Talentwettbewerb. Dieser hat eine sehr lange Tradition und jeder Dorfbewohner ist herzlich eingeladen – egal ob als Zuschauer oder Teilnehmer.
Wie in jedem Jahr gibt es Zaubertricks, Bauchredner, Sänger, alles ist bereits bekannt, doch dann kommt Kyles Freund Danny auf die Bühne und möchte dem Publikum eine Hypnosevorstellung bieten. Kyle meldet sich mit drei anderen Dorfbewohnern freiwillig als Testperson. Es scheint alles gut zu funktionieren, doch als die vier ihre Augen wieder öffnen ist nichts mehr wie zuvor …
Das Buch liest sich mit 272 Seiten sehr rasch und ich habe es nach all der Zeit immer noch gut in Erinnerung. Der Klappentext hat meiner Meinung nach nicht viel hergegeben, aber ich kann euch versichern, dass es ein beeindruckendes Buch ist und mich von Seite 1 bis zum Schluss in den Bann gezogen hat. Es wurde gleich zu Anfang ziemlich spannend, als die Freiwilligen von der Hypnose aufgewacht sind und sehen, dass alle Menschen um sie herum eingefroren sind. Ich meine, was für eine unglaubliche Idee, ich würde ja vollkommen durchdrehen, wenn mir das passieren würde. Und als die anderen Dorfeinwohner*innen nach einer Zeit aufwachen, wird dank dem neuen Update alles so schlimm, dass die vier keine Ahnung haben, was sie jetzt machen sollen. Es ist alles auf eine Art sehr merkwürdig, aber eine gute Geschichte.
Das Buch beinhaltet drei Kassetten, die von Kyle Starker, dem Hauptprotagonist gesprochen und von Mike Lancaster abgetippt worden sind. Wir finden von ihm auch immer wieder amüsante Anmerkungen, die von ihm im Text ergänzt sind. Der ganze Schreibstil ist locker geschrieben und hier kann man nicht meckern, aber die die Schrift im Buch war ja wirklich seeehr groß und hatte auch viele Absätze, die nicht gerade sehr klein waren. Dafür waren mir 272 Seiten doch zu wenig und hätte das Buch mehr Seiten gehabt, hätte man meiner Meinung nach auch mehr rausholen können.
Die Charaktere Kyle, Lilly, Kate und Rodney haben eine interessante Gruppe abgegeben, die mir auch sympathisch waren, aber man hat viel zu wenig über sie erfahren. Von Kyle weiß man, dass er 15 Jahre alt ist und seit dem 1.0 Update bezeichnet sein Hausarzt ihn als „zurückgebliebener 0.4er“ und seine Eltern haben Angst, dass er schon psychisch krank ist. Ich konnte sehr mit ihm mitfühlen und die Situation tat mir wirklich leid. Trotzdem hat die Gruppe alles gut gemeistert und sich ihre Geschichte anzuhören, war sehr interessant.
Es gibt so viele spannende Stellen, die auch wirklich gut geschrieben sind. Vor allem wusste man nie was einen gleich erwartet und vieles war anders, als gedacht. Was mich aber ein wenig enttäuscht, ist, dass der Hintergrund nicht viel hergibt. Es gibt viel zu viele offene Fragen: Durch wen ist das alles passiert und was war der Grund dahinter? Das Ende hat mir auch nicht gefallen, es kam mir vor, als hätte die Geschichte dort erst angefangen.
Und zuletzt zum Cover: Das deutsche Cover hatte meiner Meinung nach nichts mit dem Buch zu tun und da war das englische Cover wirklich besser.
Fazit
Ein lesenswertes Buch mit einer unglaublichen Idee, aber ein paar beantwortete Fragen mehr wären toll gewesen. 3 von 5 Lesesterne.
