Am 22. Januar 1957 starb im Alter von 72 Jahren in Bad Reichenhall eine Frau namens Claire Waldoff nach ihrem zweiten Schlaganfall. Eigentlich hieß sie Klara Wortmann. Sie wurde am 21.10.1884 in Gelsenkirchen als Tochter eines ehemaligen Bergmanns und Schankwirts und seiner Gattin geboren. Sie hatte Ärztin werden wollen… Doch es kam alles anders. Sie entdeckte ihre Liebe zum Theater, änderte ihren Namen und landete beim Kabarett in Berlin – und dort schrieb sie Geschichte! Von 1907 bis 1935 war sie der Star auf den Brettern der großen Kabaretts und Varietés, ihre Lieder waren Gassenhauer und wurden auf der Straße gesungen.

Claire Waldoff hat wie keine andere den Ton getroffen, der die Menschen berührte, weil sie eben »gerade vom Leben singen wollte« – von den Sorgen und Nöten, von den Freuden und Verwicklungen, die das Leben so mit sich bringt. Sie war so ganz anders als die Chansonetten, Diseusen und Frauen ihrer Generation. Noch bevor das Zeitalter der »neuen Frau« ausgerufen wurde, nahm sie sich alle Freiheiten, die ihr in den Sinn kamen. Sie rauchte Pfeife und Zigarre, liebte Nordhäuser Korn, fluchte wie ein Müllkutscher und ihre Stimme war das, was man eine »echte Röhre« nennt. Heinrich Zille nannte sie Karl (»ein Kerl wie Samt und Seide«) und zog mit ihr durch die berüchtigten Kneipen im Norden und Osten von Berlin. Ihre große Liebe war Olly von Roeder, mit der sie 40 Jahre lang Tisch und Bett teilte.

Auf der Bühne stand sie mit Schlips und Kragen, was ihr Ärger mit dem Zensor einbrachte, der die Auffassung vertrat, dass Frauen im Herrenanzug nach 23 Uhr wegen Unsittlichkeit nichts mehr auf der Bühne zu suchen hätten. Weitaus unangenehmer waren allerdings die folgenden Jahre und ihre Auseinandersetzungen mit den faschistischen Machthabern…

Sigrid Grajek (auch als Comedy-Figur »Coco Lorès« bekannt) sieht in Claire Waldoff die »Urmutter aller Kabarettistinnen«. Entsprechend leidenschaftlich bringt die Schauspielerin die Lieder und das Leben der bemerkenswerten Diseuse auf die Bühne, indem sie in die Figur Claire Waldoff schlüpft, um diese singen, spielen und erzählen zu lassen, wie ihr der Schnabel gewachsen ist.
