Im August kann in Berlin (und überall auf der Welt) ein besonderes Naturschauspiel beobachtet werden. Dann, wenn die Erde die Umlaufbahn des Kometen Swift-Tuttle und den Meteorenschauer der Perseiden streift und Tausende von Sternschnuppen vom Firmament hernieder regnen.

Bei diesem Ereignis können bis zu 100 Sternschnuppen pro Stunde am Himmel zu sehen sein. Vor allem in der Nacht vom 11. auf den 12. August, also in der Nacht zum Sonntag, wird mit einem richtigen Sternschnuppenschauer gerechnet.

Wann lohnt sich der Blick in den Himmel besonders?

Die beste Beobachtungszeit für die Meteore liegt Astronomen zufolge zwischen 2 und 4 Uhr. Es können lichtstarke, also besonders stark leuchtende Objekte auch in helleren Gegenden beobachtet werden, auch wenn natürlich weiterhin gilt, dass dunklere Orte zu bevorzugen sind. Für das wirkliche Sternschnuppen-Vergnügen fehlt eigentlich nur noch eins: ein möglichst klarer, wolkenloser Nachthimmel.

Raus ins Freie zur Sternschnuppennacht

Dr. Monika Staesche, wissenschaftliche Leiterin des Planetarium am Insulaner und der Wilhelm-Foerster-Sternwarte, rät den Berlinern, in der Nacht zum Sonntag einen Ausflug in das Berliner Umland zu machen. «Sternschnuppen beobachtet am besten mit dem bloßen Auge und bei freier Horizontsicht außerhalb der Lichtglocke der Stadt, also z.B. in Gülpe im Sternenpark oder überall dort, wo freie Felder ein möglichst großes Sichtfeld bieten». Gülpe im Naturpark Westhavelland gilt bundesweit als dunkelster Ort.

Das Naturschauspiel ist auch in den Berliner Planetarien Jahr für Jahr ein großes Ereignis, welches mit spannenden Vorträgen und Sonderveranstaltungen das interessierte Publikum informiert und unterhält.

Warum darf man sich bei Sternschuppen etwas wünschen?

Es ist ein uralter Aberglaube: Wer eine Sternschnuppe sieht, der darf sich etwas wünschen. Aber Vorsicht, der Wunsch muss unter allen Umständen unausgesprochen bleiben, sonst wird er nicht in Erfüllung gehen. Manche Erzählungen gehen sogar noch etwas weiter, wonach der Wunsch bis zum Ende des Verglühens zu Ende gedacht werden muss, damit er sich erfüllt. Woher dieser Glaube kommt ist unbekannt. Allen Theorien gemein ist, dass sich die Menschen beim Anblick des seltenen und göttlich anmutenden Lichtstrahls überirdischen Beistand erhofften.
