SIBYLLE – das war die wohl bekannteste Mode- und Kulturzeitschrift der DDR! Das Magazin feiert noch bis zum 25.8. ein Comeback in einer umfangreichen Ausstellung im Willy Brandt-Haus. Im Mittelpunkt stehen dreizehn Fotografen – darunter Sibylle Bergemann, Arno Fischer, Ute Mahler, Werner Mahler, Sven Marquardt, Elisabeth Meinke, Roger Melis, Hans Praefke, Günter Rössler, Rudolf Schäfer, Wolfgang Wandelt, Michael Weidt, Ulrich Wüst, die den fotografischen Stil des Magazins entscheidend prägten. Beginnend mit Arno Fischers street photography, indem er in den 1960er Jahren die Modefotografie auf die Straße holte oder Sibylle Bergemanns Porträts der melancholisch und zugleich souverän wirkenden jungen Schauspielerin Katharina Thalbach, bis hin zu Sven Marquardts inszenierten Fotografien der alternativen Kunstszene Berlins.

Ute Mahler, langjährige Sibylle-Fotografin, erklärt: „40 Seiten Mode, 40 Seiten Kultur… Es ging um Stil, um Geschmack und um die Ermutigung zur Individualität… In der Sibylle haben in all den Jahren die besten Fotografen des Landes gearbeitet. Sie wurden mit ihren Porträts, Reportagen, essayistischen Serien oder mit Landschaftsfotografie bekannt, deshalb ist auch die Modefotografie in dem Heft so besonders, weil wir alle in unserem Stil fotografiert haben.“
Von 1956 bis 1995 erschien die Zeitschrift sechsmal jährlich im Verlag für die Frau in Leipzig. Mit einer Auflage von 200.000 Exemplaren trug sie maßgeblich zum damaligen Frauenbild und zur Reflexion der gesellschaftlichen Verhältnisse bei.
Über zweihundert Werke in der Ausstellung zeigen die Entwicklung der Zeitschrift SIBYLLE und der Modefotografie in der DDR.
Die Ausstellung des Freundeskreis Willy-Brandt-Haus e.V. wird in Kooperation mit der Kunsthalle Rostock organisiert.

Der Freundeskreis wurde 1996 gegründet, im gleichen Jahr, in dem auch das Willy-Brandt-Haus eingeweiht wurde. Von Anfang an prägten internationale Künstler den neuen Ausstellungsort: Jewgeni Chaldej der sich in das kollektive Gedächtnis der Deutschen eingeschrieben hat mit jenem berühmten Foto von 1945. Fotografinnen wie Silvia Plachy, die für Magazine wie Newsweek, Vogue und Time Magazin arbeitete, oder die berühmte Gisèle Freund, die u.a. James Joyce, Marcel Duchamp, Virginia Woolf und Sartre porträtierte. 2012 erregte die Ausstellung „Breaking the Silence“ großes Aufsehen: Israelische Soldaten berichteten, wie die langanhaltende Besatzung sich im Alltag in den palästinensischen Gebieten bemerkbar macht und wie sich militärische Angriffe und Straßensperren auf die Zivilbevölkerung auswirken.
Seit 2002 präsentiert der Freundeskreis den jährlich vergebenen World Press Photo Award, den weltweit größten und renommiertesten Wettbewerb für Pressefotografie.
Zu sehen sind dramatische Bilder von den Brennpunkten der Welt.
In regelmäßigen Abständen veranstaltet der Freundeskreis Lesungen und Filmabende an der Schnittstelle zwischen Kunst und Politik.
