50 Jahre Jazzfest Berlin

Im Jahr 2014 feierten die Berliner Festspiele 50 Jahre Jazzfest Berlin. Die Ereignisse um den Martin Luther King Besuch 1964 in Berlin und 25 Jahre Mauerfall wurden auch beim Jazzfest mit einer Reihe von Programmpunkten thematisiert. Die WDR Big Band präsentierte mit dem Sänger Kurt Elling ein speziell für das diesjährige Jazzfest zusammengestelltes Programm mit dem Titel „Freedom Songs“. Der britische Saxofonist und Rapper Soweto Kinch reflektierte in seiner Musik sozialkritische Themen. Der künstlerische Leiter des Jazzfest Berlin 2014 war Bert Noglik. Sein Nachfolger ist der Brite Richard Williams.

Wie die Berliner Festspiele Mitte April 2017 bekannt gaben, wird die Kuratorin Nadin Deventer 2018 künstlerische Leiterin des Jazzfestes Berlin. Sie löse Richard Williams ab, der das Festival seit 2015 leitete und sich in diesem Jahr verabschiedet.

Im traurigen Monat November verheißt das JazzFest Berlin ein bisschen Trost. Das 1964 gegründete Festival gehört zu den wichtigsten Veranstaltungen des zeitgenössischen Jazz. In den ersten beiden Jahrzehnten dominierten noch überwiegend US-amerikanische Stars das Festival, was für seinen Nimbus gar nicht so schlecht war. In den 80ern legte man dann den Schwerpunkt erfolgreich auf Jazz als Weltmusik. 2012 hat der Journalist und Kurator Bert Noglik die Festivalleitung von dem renommierte Jazz-Posaunisten Nils Landgren übernommen.
