Das 13-köpfige Stamm-Team rund um Geschäftsführer Stefan Sperling und Teamleiterin Andrea Franke arbeitet zumeist schon lange in dem inhabergeführten Laden. Manche der speziell auf Büro- und Schreibwarenhandel geschulten Fachverkäufer waren bereits schon zur Lehre bei Thörner. Gegründet wurde der großräumige, Efeu-umrankte Laden 1949 vom „Humphrey Bogart der Schreibwaren“ – dem galanten Gerhard Thörner, der mit Hut und Trenchcoat an der Außenfassade des Ladengeschäfts prangt. Wie bei vielen Erfolgsgeschichten kaufmännischer Start-Ups begann alles in einer Wohnung und mit einem Kleinmotorrad mit Anhänger. Aber dazu später mehr ….
Gerhards Sohn – und der heutige Inhaber Bodo Thörner – hat sich schon als Knirps hinter dem Tresen ausprobiert und den Duft von Papier quasi mit der Muttermilch eingesogen (unbedingt nach dem historischen Foto im Laden fragen).

Beim Betreten des voll gespickten Schreibwaren-Universums sollten unbedingt die historischen Schwarzweiß Bilder, die über den Warenvitrinen und Regalen hängen, ins Auge gefasst werden. Sie erinnern an die gute alte Zeit des Einzelhandels. Viele Kund*innen werden sich in dieser Atmosphäre aber sicherlich auch wohlwollend an die eigene Kindheit erinnert fühlen. Spätestens ab der Einschulung schnupperte man das erste Mal diesen sanft-matten Duft von Papier und Bleistiften. Sich (nach der Wahl des ersten Schulranzens und der Schulanfänger-Wundertüte) durch die 1001 Büroartikel zu forsten, die sich in Regalen, Vitrinen und Schubladen offerierten, blieb und bleibt zu jedem Schuljahrwechsel ein besonderes Ritual.

Hier die Ecke für die Buntstifte, da die Kiste mit den lustigen Radiergummis und Federmäppchen und dort die linierten oder karierten Hefte und Stifte in allen Formaten. Später kommen dann die Bürokrams-Dinge fürs Studium, fürs Büro oder das eigene Homeoffice dazu. Irgendetwas braucht man immer … heute wie früher …

Zu Thörner kommen heute die Eltern mit ihren Kids zur Einschulung an den gleichen Ort, wo sie selbst schon als Kinder gestöbert haben. Für viele ältere Kieznachbarn ist „Thörner“ wie ihr zweites Wohnzimmer“.

Die Unterzeile Thörner (Büro, Schule, Trends) heißt nicht umsonst „Alles fürs Büro“ – denn in der Tat sind fast alle sowie auch sehr spezielle „Büro-Nischen-Produkte“ sofort abrufbar, was sich schon Berlin-weit herumgesprochen hat. So freut sich der eine über ein Flipchart der andere über Moderationskarten, die wie vieles andere im geräumigen Laden ohne große Bestell-Arien sofort mitgenommen werden können. Viele Kunden kommen dafür mittlerweile quer durch die Stadt gefahren, um die gesucht-gefundene Waren auf dem schnellsten und direktesten Weg zu erhalten (ein Credo der Thörners). Auch Stempel Gravuren und Prägungen werden gefertigt. Das Angebot ist ebenso klassisch wie ausgefallen, funktional und dekorativ und man hat – im Sinne des Gründers – das Gefühl, dass hier einfach an alles gedacht wird.

Das Repertoire an dekorativen Mitbringsel wird von einer üppigen Auswahl an Grußkarten ergänzt. Briefbögen, Umschläge oder gebundenen Schmuckbücher sind in sehr, wirklich sehr! vielen Farben zu bekommen. Die „Einwickelware“ – die Geschenkpapierbögen – findet sich mit allen Muster- und Knistervarianten in einem Extraräumchen für Geschenk-Angelegenheiten, gleich hinter der Vitrine mit den Edelschreibgriffeln rechts. Bei Kindern ist Thörner vor allem auch als Quelle für kunterbunte Kindergeburtstagsausstattung und allerlei Mal- und Bastelwerk beliebt. Neben der Mitbringsel-Kultur und weiteren Lifestyle-Deko-Objekten gibt es auch Rucksäcke und kleine Reisetaschen. Das passt ins Sortiment, denn Thörner hat auf jeden Fall Kurzreise-Potential …. so viel gibt´s hier zu sehen … .

Gegründet wurde das Unternehmen bereits 1949. Was in der privaten Wohnung und mit einem Kleinmotorrad für den Versand begann, entwickelte sich schnell zu einer richtigen Firma.

Im April 1949 gründet Gerhard Thörner seine Firma für Bürobedarf in Berlin-Westend. Im Nachkriegs-Berlin macht er sich auf, um das fürs Büro zu verkaufen, was es gerade gibt: Papier, Ordner, Geldkassetten, Geschäftsbücher und einiges an uns heute unbekannten Dingen fürs Büro. Mit einem Kleinmotorrad und einem passgerechten Anhänger betreibt er die persönliche Logistik der damaligen Zeit.

Durch Zuverlässigkeit, Mut und Visionen entwickelt sich langsam ein kleiner, aber zuverlässiger Kundenstamm. Das „Versandzentrum“ in der Wohnung wird zu klein und so entsteht 1957 in einem Geschäftshaus am Fehrbelliner Platz in Wilmersdorf eine „richtige Firma“.

Schnell ist man bei 8 Mitarbeitern und bietet eine Abholmöglichkeit mit Selbstbedienung, die 1958 noch nicht so verbreitet ist. Ein alter DKW-Kombi ist damals Thörners Paketdienst mit sofortiger Zustellung.

1972 geht es dann an den heutigen Standort in Berlin-Schöneberg. In einem schönen über 100-jährigen Altbau, zwischen Bayerischem Platz und Rathaus Schöneberg, entsteht ein Laden mit viel Charme im historischen Bayerischen Viertel. Stöbern, ansehen, aussuchen, abholen oder liefern lassen: Das ist der gute, alte Service!
