Wer in einer Krise steckt oder auf eine Depression zusteuert, benötigt Hilfe. Sofort und überall. Das ist Überzeugung und Antrieb von Nora Blum (25), Kati Bermbach (25) und Farina Schurzfeld (30), die im Februar 2016 in Berlin das Startup Selfapy gründeten. Heute ist Deutschlands erstes Online- Portal, das systematische Selbsthilfe und persönliche Gespräche mit Psychologen am Telefon oder via Skype miteinander verbindet, bereits eine Erfolgsgeschichte: 1.500 Betroffene sind angemeldet und zeigen nach neun Wochen eine Verminderung der Symptome von durchschnittlich 20 Prozent. Damit ist der Kurs im Netz genauso wirksam wie die traditionelle Psychotherapie. Auch die Krankenkassen haben das Potential des Onlineangebots erkannt: Seit März 2017 wird der erste Kurs von Selfapy von den deutschen Krankenkassen erstattet. Nun steht die Internationalisierung an, damit Selfapy möglichst bald die Versorgungs-Situation von psychisch Kranken in ganz Europa verbessern kann.
„Psychische Gesundheit sollte weder vom Geldbeutel, der Versorgungssituation noch Scham und Stigma abhängen“, sagt Kati Bermbach. Die 25-Jährige erfuhr noch während ihres Studiums im Rahmen ihrer Forschungstätigkeit an der Charité, wie katastrophal die Lage für die meisten Depressiven ist. „Jeden Tag musste ich Menschen sagen, dass es keinen Therapieplatz für sie gibt. Diese Gespräche dauerten oft eine dreiviertel Stunde. Die Betroffenen waren verzweifelt, weinten. Es war klar: Da muss sich etwas ändern“, erinnert sich Bermbach, die heute mit ihrer Co-Gründerin und Freundin Nora Blum und dem Startup Selfapy in Berlin eine neue Zeit einläuten will. Gemeinsam sind sie auf dem Weg, die Versorgungssituation für Psychotherapien komplett umzukrempeln und finden immer mehr Unterstützer für ihre Mission. „Wenn man offen über Depressionen spricht, wagen auch andere, ihre Erfahrungen zu teilen und es wird deutlich, wie verbreitet psychische Erkrankungen in allen Altersgruppen und Schichten sind“, sagt Co-Founderin Farina Schurzfeld, die auf Selfapy aufmerksam wurde und sofort ein Teil der Bewegung sein wollte. „Wir haben die großartige Chance, das Leben von Depressiven Eklatant und nachhaltig zu verbessern. Eine bessere Motivation, um Wachstum und die Verbreitung einer neuen Idee anzuschieben, gibt es nicht.“
In Deutschland leiden 20 Millionen Menschen an einer psychischen Erkrankung wie Burnout, Depression oder Angststörungen. Oftmals müssen sie vier, nicht selten aber auch sechs oder acht Monate auf eine Behandlung warten – ein Zeitrsaum, in welchem sich die Symptome verschlimmern Das Gründerteam: Kati Bermbach, Nora Blum, Farina Schurzfeld und die Lage unerträglich werden können. Etwa zwei Drittel der ungefähr 10.000 Suizide im Jahr entfallen auf Depressive. Auch die Scham ist immer noch ein Thema, nur jeder Zweite wagt den Schritt nach Außen und sucht sich Hilfe.
„Jeder kann in eine Krise geraten. Es kann nicht sein, dass es so schwierig ist, professionelle Hilfe zu erhalten“, sagt Nora Blum, 25. Die Hamburgerin kommt aus einer Familie von Psychotherapeuten und engagiert sich schon so lange sie denken kann für den Abbau von Berührungsängsten mit dem Thema Depression. „Bei uns ist das eine Familienangelegenheit“, so Blum. Bruder David studierte zwar BWL, arbeitet aber inzwischen als Life Coach, ihre Mutter Sabine Blum ist Psychotherapeutin und unterstützt Selfapys Psychologen-Team. Kennen lernten sich die beiden jungen Frauen in Cambridge, wo Blum studierte, während eines Vortrags. „Wir stellten fest, dass wir die einzigen Deutschen sind und kamen ins Gespräch.“ Später wurde in einem Pub weiter debattiert. Wie kann es sein, dass psychische Krankheiten immer noch unbehandelt bleiben und mit Stigmatisierungen behaftet sind? Die beiden Frauen teilten die gleichen Gedanken voller Entrüstung. Studienkollegen aus ihrem Umfeld waren erkrankt und sie erlebten das Thema ihrer Berufung auch privat hautnah. „Ich dachte mir, wir könnten zwar als Therapeuten arbeiten und einen guten Job machen, aber an dem riesigen Struktur-Problem würde das nichts ändern“, erinnert sich Bermbach.
So formte sich der Entschluss: Wir wollen einen nachhaltigen Wandel! Warum sollten Menschen nicht über das Internet Hilfe finden? „In einem geschützten Raum Anleitungen und persönliche Unterstützung zu finden, ist ein neuer Ansatz. Besonders in ländlichen Gegenden ist es die beste Lösung, um die Zeit, bis ein Therapeut gefunden ist, zu überbrücken“, erklärt Bermbach. Denn Selfapy will nicht die Psychotherapie an sich in virtuelle Welten verlagern: „Es geht um die kritische
Zeit davor, aber auch danach, wenn das Erlernte umgesetzt und in den Alltag integriert werden muss“, erklärt Blum. Die smarten Mädels gingen strategisch an die Umsetzung ihres Plans heran: Kati ging an die Charité und entwickelte die Fragebögen und Kursinhalte, während Nora bei Rocket Internet anfing, um in die
E-Commerce und Startup-Welt einzutauchen. Eineinhalb Jahre später, zuletzt als Chefin des Lieferdienstes Foodora in Hamburg, fühlte sich Blum bereit für das eigene Unternehmen. „Der Name Selfapy stand bereits fest und 30 Testnutzer hatten uns super Feedback gegeben! Es war der perfekte Moment“, erinnert sich Blum.
Wenige Monate später ist das zehnköpfige Team in der Spur und eine Seed-Finanzierung im hohen sechsstelligen Bereich (Digital Health Ventures, Little Rock Ventures, Wooga COO und Hitmeister Gründer Jan Miczaik & Gerald Schönbucher) ist bereits abgeschlossen. Sechs Psychologen und eine Psychologische Leitung kümmern sich um die 1.500 angemeldeten, an Depressionen erkrankten Menschen – und täglich melden sich neue an. Um das Wachstum auszubauen und die
Internationalisierung vorzubereiten, erweiterte Selfapy das Führungsteam im Juni 2016. Farina Schurzfeld, 30, wurde zur CMO ernannt. Die international erfahrener Wachstums-Strategin war Teil des Gründerteams von Groupon Australia, Mitgründerin und Geschäftsführerin von Airtasker. Auch Schurzfeld kam mit dem Thema Depressionen bereits im familiären Umfeld in Kontakt und fühlt sich daher mit der Vision Selfapys, einen Beitrag zur nachhaltigen Verbesserung der Situation Depressiver in Deutschland und Europa zu leisten, stark verbunden. „Das Leid von Menschen die man liebt, prägtfür das ganze Leben.“
Während der Online Psychotherapie durchlaufen die Patienten einen in neun Wochen-Module gegliederten Selbsthilfekurs gegen Depressionen. Im Anschluss können Betroffene weitere Kurse buchen die sich mit den Themen Angst, Burnout oder Ernährung beschäftigen. Rund 20 Minuten täglich muss man für Übungen aufwenden, die lebensnah gestaltetet sind. Bei Bedarf telefonieren oder chatten die Kursteilnehmer einmal pro Woche rund 20-45 Minuten lang mit den Selfapy Psychologen. „Wir sind persönlich für die Betroffenen da und haben den Vorteil, dass die Gespräche in der gewohnten Umgebung der Erkrankten stattfinden. Für viele ist die Hemmschwelle, sich zu öffnen, dann niedriger“, erklärt Bermbach. Darüber hinaus trägt die unkomplizierte Verfügbarkeit des Hilfsangebots dazu bei, Berührungsängste und Vorurteile abzubauen. „Selfapy hilft, psychische Erkrankungen in die Mitte der Gesellschaft zu rücken. Jeder kann sich Informationen und Unterstützung holen und das immer und überall. Alles ist unkompliziert und angstfrei. Und wer unzufrieden ist, bekommt sein Geld zurück“, so Blum. Alle zwei Wochen wird der Fortschritt des Patienten ermittelt. „So stellen wir fest, ob der Nutzer eine intensivere Betreuung benötigt, die wir dann anbieten. Außerdem können wir so feststellen, wie wirksam das Selfapy-Programm für den Nutzer ist“, sagt Bermbach.
Eine klinische Studie des Universitätsklinikums Eppendorf (UKE) belegte im Februar 2017 die Wirksamkeit der Kurse von Selfapy und bestätigte gleichzeitig, was zahlreiche internationale Erhebungen bei ähnlichen Angeboten aus den USA und Skandinavien bereits belegten: Das Online Therapieprogramm kann zur Behandlung von Depressionen die Krankheitssymptome schnell und signifikant reduzieren. Der neunwöchige Online-Kurs kostet aktuell 149,90 Euro, die bis jetzt privat getragen werden müssen. Wer die Summe nicht zahlen kann, wird aber nicht abgewiesen. „Wir nehmen ganz bewusst auch Menschen in unser Programm auf, die sich die Gebühr nicht leisten können. Die Kosten übernimmt dann Selfapy“, so Nora Blum. Von Anfang an war es allerdings das Ziel der Gründerinnen, dass die Angebote von Selfapy von den Krankenkassen übernommen werden.
Einen ersten Erfolg konnten sie nun verbuchen: die Mehrheit der gesetzlichen Krankenkassen übernimmt seit März 2017 die Gebühren für den Online Stresskurs von Selfapy. „Wir freuen uns über diesen Erfolg. Es ist ein erster Schritt in die richtige Richtung. Unser Ziel bleibt aber die Erstattungsfähigkeit aller Angebote von Selfapy“, so Nora Blum, Gründerin von Selfapy. Gleichzeitig treibt das Frauen-Trio die Internationalisierung von Selfapy voran. „In fünf Jahren wollen wir an Angststörungen, Depressionen, Essstörungen oder Depressionen erkrankten Menschen in ganz Europa helfen und der größte digitale Anbieter sein“, sagt Kati Bermbach.
