Zwischen 1966 und 1970 studiert Stephen King Englisch an der Universität von Maine, wo er Tabitha Spruce kennenlernt und ein Jahr später heiratet. Nach seinem Examen arbeitet King in der Stadt Hampton in Maine als Englischlehrer. Mit Nachtschichten als Bügler in einer Wäscherei hält er sich über Wasser. In der wenigen Freizeit schreibt er Kurzgeschichten. Obwohl es ihm hin und wieder gelingt, eine Geschichte zu verkaufen, ist er noch weit davon entfernt, sich sein Einkommen allein durch seine Arbeit als Schriftsteller sichern zu können. Er schreibt mehrere Romane, für die er aber keinen Verlag findet. Er zweifelt an seiner schriftstellerischen Begabung. Später veröffentlicht er diese Romane überarbeitet unter dem Pseudonym Richard Bachman.
In einem gemieteten Wohnwagen beginnt King seinen Roman Carrie zu schreiben. Wie King später verrät, hielt er das Carrie-Manuskript beim Durchlesen für schlecht und beförderte es in den Müll. Seine Frau fischte es heraus und spornte King dazu an, das Buch zu vollenden. 1973 kauft der Verlag Doubleday den Roman. Die Veröffentlichung seines Debüts im Jahr 1974 und dessen erfolgreiche Verfilmung machen Stephen King schlagartig berühmt. Er entschließt sich, den Lehrerberuf aufzugeben und sich ganz dem Schreiben zu widmen. Wenig später erscheint sein zweiter Roman The Shining – sein erster Roman, der auf der Bestsellerliste erscheint. Mit ebenfalls großem Erfolg veröffentlicht King in den folgenden Jahren weitere Romane und Kurzgeschichtensammlungen. Viele seiner Romane wurden fürs Kino oder das Fernsehen verfilmt; im Jahr 2017 werden gleich zwei große Projekte auf die Leinwand kommen: Der Dunkle Turm und eine Neuverfilmung von ES.
