Entstanden aus dem Dunstkreis von Bands wie Kyuss, Queens of the Stone Age, Goatsnake und den Eagles of Death Metal, gehören earthlings? zu den bestgehüteten Geheimnissen des Stoner Rock. Gestartet 1994 als ein weiteres Seitenprojekt von ohnehin schwer beschäftigten Musikern, blickt die Formation auf wechselhafte zwei Jahrzehnte gemeinsamer Geschichte. Während sie in den Neunzigern noch intensiv an einer eigenständigen Karriere arbeiteten und ihren durch allerlei Space-Sounds aufgeladenen Stoner Rock weltweit präsentierten, ließ die Intensität ihrer Arbeit mit dem tragischen Tod ihres Mitbegründers Fred Drake im Jahr 2002 spürbar nach: Seither erschienen nur noch vereinzelte EPs und Singles, Konzerte der Band waren ebenso rar. Nun kehren earthlings? mit voller Wucht und ihrem nunmehr dritten Studioalbum „Mudda Fudda“zurück in den Rockzirkus. Das streng limitierte, nur auf Vinyl erschienene Album zeigt die Band in bis dahin nicht gehörter Größe und Dringlichkeit, nun steht zudem die erste Europa-Tournee seit mehr als einem Jahrzehnt an. Zwischen dem 27. und 29. März gastieren earthlings? in Köln, Berlin und Hamburg.

Die Geschichte von earthlings? beginnt rund um den Siegeszug des Stoner Rock Mitte der Neunzigerjahre – und zwar genau dort, wo dieser einzigartig druckvolle Rocksound geboren wurde: In Joshua Tree, der kalifornischen Wüste, wo auch Kyuss sowie deren Nachfolgeband Queens of the Stone Age ihren Anfang nehmen. Ursprünglich sind earthlings? ein reines Studioprojekt, gegründet von Fred Drake, einem Gitarristen, Keyboarder und Bassisten, der zugleich Mitinhaber des legendären Rancho de la Luna-Studios in Joshua Tree ist. In ebenjenem Studio entstehen rund um diese Zeit viele der bedeutendsten Stoner-Rock-Alben der ersten Generation; die damit verbundenen Musiker gehen in diesem Studio ein und aus und treffen sich unregelmäßig in wechselnden Formationen, um die inzwischen legendäre Reihe „Desert Sessions“ fortzusetzen – eine mittlerweile zehnteilige Albumserie, auf der die bedeutendsten Protagonisten der Post-Grunge- und frühen Stoner-Rock-Ära in spontan arrangierten Line-Ups improvisatorische Rock-Grandezza aufnehmen.

An den „Desert Sessions 3 + 4“ nehmen auch die künftigen Mitglieder von earthlings? Teil, die sich in der Folge zu einer neuen festen Band zusammenfinden. Neben Fred Drake sind dies Gitarrist/Keyboarder Dave Catching (Queens of the Stone Age, Mondo Generator, Masters of Reality), Sänger Peter Stahl (Scream, Wool, Goatsnake), Schlagzeuger Adam Maples sowie Gitarrist und Keyboarder Edmund Monsef, seines Zeichens Inhaber des zweiten bedeutenden Stoner-Rock-Studios The Hacienda. Durch die vielschichtigen Studio-Aktivitäten von Drake und Monsef bleiben earthlings? zunächst ein reines Studio-Projekt, das 1998 sein selbstbetiteltes Debütalbum veröffentlicht. Erst zwei Jahre später, nachdem die Presse das zweite Album„Human Beans“ mit geradezu hysterischen Kritiken feiert, entschließt sich die Band, neben einigen seltenen Live-Auftritten endlich auch offiziell auf Tournee zu gehen.

Zwar verlieren earthlings? auch während dieser Zeit nie ganz den Ruch eines Seitenprojektes; im Zuge des weltweiten Siegeszugs der Queens of the Stone Age wird die Band aber ebenfalls dermaßen gefeiert, dass sie sich anschickt, eine weitere bedeutende Kraft im Stoner Rock zu werden – allerdings aufgeladen mit einem für dieses Genre eher untypischen Faible für Psychedelic- und Spacerock. Viele analoge Synthesizer sowie die ausgefuchste Sound-Arbeit der zur Band zählenden Studio-Inhaber machen earthlings? zu einer der eigenständigsten und ungewöhnlichsten Bands dieser Szene.

2002 folgt die Zäsur, bedingt durch den plötzlichen Tod von Fred Drake. Die anderen Mitglieder konzentrieren sich für mehr als ein Jahrzehnt erst einmal auf ihre jeweiligen Hauptbands und treffen sich höchstens alle paar Jahre, um eine neue Single aufzunehmen; auf ein neues Album muss die Fangemeinde 16 lange Jahre warten. Jenes erschien nun 2016 unter dem Titel„Mudda Fudda“ und zeigt, dass earthlings? nichts verlernt haben – im Gegenteil: Sie klingen so frisch und kraftvoll wie am ersten Tag – und obendrein erneut unterstützt von vielen Größen des Genres, darunter Josh Homme, Matthias Schneeberger, Brant Bjork, Gene Trautman und John Garcia.
