Heute findet hier in der Hauptstadt der Echo statt. Mit dem Deutschen Musikpreis Echo zeichnet die Deutsche Phono-Akademie jedes Jahr herausragende Leistungen nationaler und internationaler Musikkünstler aus.

Seit 1992 zeichnet die Deutsche Phono-Akademie, das Kulturinstitut des Bundesverbandes der Musikindustrie e.V., einmal im Jahr herausragende Leistungen nationaler und internationaler Musikkünstler und Branchenvertreter mit dem Deutschen Musikpreis Echo aus. Die 26. Ausgabe der Echo Gala findet im Palais am Funkturm (Messe Berlin) in Berlin statt und wird live im Fernsehen übertragen.

2016: Puhdys erhalten Echo für ihr Lebenswerk

Die Auszeichung in der Kategorie „Lebenswerk“ ging bei der letzten Verleihung im April 2016 an die Berliner Rock-Band Puhdys. Die Deutsche Phono-Akademie ehrte das Quintett als eine Band, die mit ihren Songs legendäre Beiträge zur Geschichte der deutschsprachigen Rockmusik leisteten.

In insgesamt 22 Kategorien werden die begehrten Preise vergeben: Album des Jahres, Künstler Rock/Pop national, Künstler Rock/Pop international, Künstlerin Rock/Pop national, Künstlerin Rock/Pop international, Band Rock/Pop national, Band Rock/Pop international, Schlager, Volkstümliche Musik, Hip-Hop/Urban, Dance national, Dance international, Rock/Alternative national, Rock/Alternative international, Crossover, Newcomer national, Newcomer international, Hit des Jahres, Musik-DVD/Blu-Ray national und Radio-Echo.

Neuerungen 2017

Für jedes musikalisches Genre gibt es eine Fachjury. Deren Stimme werde ab 2017 ein deutlich höheres Gewicht bei der Vergabe haben, so der Bundesverband Musikindustrie. Der Preis wechselt in diesem Jahr den Sender und wird künftig statt im Ersten bei Vox zu sehen sein.
