In der vor Kurzem erst eröffneten Gallery of Steel Figures Berlin erwacht Altmetall wie in einer magischen, begehbaren Wunderkammer zu neuem Leben. Nach dem Motto „Vom Schrottplatz in die Galerie“ haben 120 Künstler aus ausrangierten Auto- und Flugzeugteilen, abgenutzten Schrauben und Muttern, alten Zündkerzen und Zahnräder überlebensgroße Kunstobjekte zum Anfassen und Erleben erschaffen. Über 50 sind in der neuen Berliner Attraktion Unter den Linden 14 zu entdecken. Das ist Upcycling in einer anderen Dimension mit viel Interaktion: Denn die gigantischen Aliens, riesigen Autoroboter, übergroßen Märchenfiguren, realistisch anmutenden Tiere und originalgetreuen Nachbauten von seltenen Luxusautos sollen und dürfen ausprobiert und haptisch entdeckt werden – mit den Augen und den Händen. In manchen stählernen Artefakten kann man es sich auch bequem machen.
„Wir möchten, dass unsere Besucher die Objekte erleben. Alles darf angefasst werden, jede Figur ist einzigartig und das sollen die Besucher nicht nur mit ihren Augen, sondern auch mit den Händen entdecken“, erklärt Emily Beckmann, Managing Director. „Besonders spannend ist, dass bei unseren Charakteren und Autos mit Zylinderköpfen und Motorkolben das Innere nach außen gekehrt wird und Teile, die sonst verborgen unter der Motorhaube liegen, sichtbar und erfahrbar werden.“

Das macht Gallery of Steel Figures Berlin im ehemaligen Mercedeshaus zu einer Galerie der besonderen Art. Man könnte hier auch von einem nachhaltigen Konzept sprechen: Jedes Objekt in der Galerie besteht zu 100% aus Altmetall. Muttern und Schrauben, Bremsklötze und Fahrradketten – alles, was auf Schrottplätzen zu finden ist, wird verarbeitet. Die Herstellung eines Objektes dauert bis zu 6 Monate. Für einen Autoroboter, der so hoch ist wie zwei ausgewachsene Männer, wurden beispielsweise ca. 37.000 Teile verbaut, was am Ende 300 kg auf die Waage bringt – mehr als ein ausgewachsener Grizzlybär. Die Figuren sind dabei so robust und stabil zusammengeschweißt, dass Berührungsängste überflüssig sind und jedes Teil von den Besuchern angefasst werden kann.
Besucher können auf zwei Etagen in eine Fantasie-Welt aus Stahl tauchen. Science-Fiction Fans kommen mit Aliens und Fabelwesen aus Metall auf ihre Kosten, Liebhaber von Robotern und Comic-Helden finden eine Lieblingsfigur, Autoliebhaber können seltene Luxuskarosserien entdecken und sogar in einem Ferrari 488 Spider sitzen. Familien mit großen und kleinen Kindern, Berliner und Touristen – jeder, der Lust auf ein neues Kunsterlebnis hat – ist in der Gallery of Steel Figures Berlin am richtigen Ort. Berlin bietet den übergrossen Schrottskulpturen bereits das vierte Zuhause. Nach der Eröffnung der ersten Galerie 2011 in Pruszkow folgten Warschau und Prag.
