Ende Dezember 2016 wurde Patti Smith sage und schreibe 70 Jahre alt – wer sie in den letzten Jahren auf der Bühne erlebt hat, sei es 2015 anläßlich ihrer gefeierten Tournee „40 years of HORSES“, sei es mit ihrem in den letzten Jahren entwickelten Showformat „An evening of words & music“, wird es kaum glauben. Publikum und Presse feiern die (neuerdings zunehmend raren) Auftritte von Patti Smith, standing ovations sind die Regel. Kaum eine Musikerin fasziniert die Menschen derart wie die „Schamanin des Rock“. In allen bedeutenden Feuilletons wurde Patti Smith ausführlich porträtiert, man sprach von „der einzigartigen Mystikerin“ (FAZ), der „Halbikone“ (SZ), der „Rock-Diva“ und „Galionsfigur der New Yorker Punkbewegung“ (NZZ), von einer „Meisterin der Anbetung und der Anverwandlung“ (Tagesspiegel), und „Draculas sanfte Tochter – die Poetin des Punkrock“ („Spiegel“): „Auf der Bühne, als Musikerin ist Patti Smith sanfter geworden mit den Jahren, doch nicht weniger eindringlich. Eine selten gezogene, aber wesentliche Verbindung ist die von Fleiß und Punk, Punk und Disziplin. ‚Wer nicht hart arbeitet, wird es nie zu etwas bringen‘, sagte sie der SZ: ‚Daß Warhol nur mit Rumstehen Warhol wurde, ist ein Mythos. Er hat hart gearbeitet.‘ (…) Sie bleibt doppeldeutig. Sie ist mittendrin und Randfigur zugleich. Eine Halbikone. Mit ihren Hosenträgern und ihrem stolzen Blick auf dem Cover ihres Debütalbums ‚Horses‘ liefert Patti Smith ein Rollenmodell für Frauen jedweder Generation. (…) Punk formuliert sich bei ihr eher in Haltung, Stil, in ihrer Androgynie. Die Rockmusik dient ihr oft lediglich zum Transport ihrer elaborierten Texte.“ (Frank Junghänel in der „Berliner Zeitung)

Kurz vor ihrem 70. Geburtstag trug Patti Smith bei der Nobelpreisverleihung in Stockholm Bob Dylans Song „A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall“ vor, und ihr herzergreifender Vortrag ist mittlerweile legendär – das Abbrechen, das neue Ansetzen, „ich hatte nicht den Text vergessen, den ich völlig verinnerlicht habe. Ich war einfach unfähig, ihn zutage zu fördern“, schrieb sie in einem Essay im „New Yorker“. „Es ist dieser Augenblick des Unperfekten, eines Scheiterns, das in Wahrheit ganz allein menschlich ist, der ihre Darbietung unvergeßlich macht“, schrieb Frank Junghänel sehr richtig über diesen Auftritt. Vielleicht ist genau das der Hauptgrund dafür, daß Patti Smith bis heute so erfolgreich, ja, wenn man genau ist, heute sogar weit erfolgreicher ist als in den Jahrzehnten zuvor – das Publikum spürt die Menschlichkeit und Glaubwürdigkeit einer klugen Frau, die Fans spüren die Ernsthaftigkeit einer großen Künstlerin, die sich nach wie vor bei jedem ihrer seltener werdenden Konzerte verausgabt, alles gibt. Und die in jeder Sekunde ihres künstlerischen Daseins, ob auf der Bühne oder in den Seiten ihrer Bücher, Haltung zeigt, in der Gewißheit: ein anderes Leben ist möglich. People have the Power! „Die Wölfin – Gefährlicher als früher: Patti Smith‘ glorioser Auftritt in Berlin“ titelte die „Süddeutsche Zeitung“ vor einigen Jahren.

Joachim Hentschel schrieb: „Der Furor der klugen, 67 Jahre alten Frau. Der irrwitzige Glaube an eine Macht der Wörter (…) Die Band spielt eucharistisch glühende Fassungen von ‚Redondo Beach‘, ‚My Blakean Year‘, ‚Birdland‘ – bei dem Patti Smith mitten im Stück Dichterkladde und Lesebrille von sich wirft und sich tatsächlich in eine Wölfin verwandelt, die gefährlicher wirkt als früher. (…) Ungefähr drei Stunden nach Konzertende geht langsam die Gänsehaut weg.“ Und die „Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung“ schrieb über dieses Konzert: „Als Patti Smith dann ‚Gloria‘ spielte, kletterten eben noch unscheinbare ältere Fans über Kirchenbänke und warfen vor der Bühne rhythmisch ihre Arme in die Lift. Bei ‚Banga‘ fingen sie schließlich an zu jaulen. Eine Künstlerin, die eine Vision anbietet, was Rock’n’Roll mal war und sein wollte – und eben immer noch sein kann: Eine Urkraft, die die Welt verändern kann.
