Die im südöstlichen Teil Neuköllns gelegene Späth’sche Baumschule (Späth-Arboretum) ist der älteste Gartenbetrieb Europas. Mit seiner innerstädtischen Lage ist er in dieser Form weltweit einmalig. Wie jedes Jahr präsentieren Weingüter aus ganz Deutschland hier ihre Winzerweine an einem Wochenende (26. und 27. Juli – Programm siehe unten). Wir erzählen die Geschichte dieses „Mekkas für Gartenfreunde“.
Schilderwald im Arboretum
Als Gärtnermeister Christoph Späth 1720 seine kleine Obst- und Gemüsegärtnerei eröffnete, ahnte er nicht, dass diese einmal zur größten Baumschule der Welt wachsen und gedeihen würde. Berlins ältester Produktionsbetrieb ist heute ein Bau- und Gartendenkmal, das schnurstracks auf sein 300-jähriges Jubiläum zusteuert. In dem von der Straße aus eher schlecht einsehbarem Ort in Berlin-Treptow eröffnet sich seinen Besuchern ein kleines Gartenbauimperium, das Weltkriege und Enteignungen nur knapp überlebt hat. Noch heute hat ein weltweit verstreutes Ur-Saatgut hier seine Keimstätte und die Pflanzenbibel seines Nachfahren Dr. Hellmut Späth liegt mit anderen antiken Schmökern, wohlbehütet wie ein goldener Gral im Safe. Der studierte Botaniker, Geologe, Nationalökonom und Philosoph hatte den Betrieb 1912 übernommen und mit seinem Fachwissen zu weltweitem Ruhm verholfen. Nach einer glorreichen 200-Jahrfeier trieb ihn die Weltwirtschaftskrise 1933 in die Arme der Nazis.
Um 1900 galt das Arboretum bereits als die zur damaligen Zeit weltweit größte Baumschule mit internationalen Handelsbeziehungen. 1930 umfasste es 4500 unterschiedliches Sortengut. Heute befinden sich im Herrenhaus die „historisch anmutenden „Büroräume und Fachberatungsstellen. Hier liegt in einem Safe auch die Späth´sche Urbibel.
Mit Großaufträgen wie die Begrünung des Olympiastadions oder des Flughafen Tempelhof rettet er damals den Betrieb. Durch einen Verrat in den inneren Reihen, wurde er 1943 verhaftet und 1945 im Konzentrationslager Sachsenhausen ermordet. In Fachkreisen wird er wie ein Urvater der hohen Gartenkunst verehrt. Noch heute wachsen auf dem Nährboden seines Wissens sortengeschützte Bäume wie die Winterlinde „Merkur“ ausschließlich hier. Eine neue Zuchtart kommt oft erst nach 20 Jahren auf den Markt. Zur Wende erfuhr der Betrieb einen zweiten herben Einschnitt und wurde sieben Jahre von der Treuhand zwangsverwaltet. Bis heute muss sich der Betrieb von diesem „Stillstand auf Staatskosten“ erholen. Erst 1997 nach der Rückübertragung an die Späth´schen Erben wurde der Betrieb wiederbelebt.
Gartenbauingenieur Holger Zahn
Heute erfüllt nicht nur Blumenduft, sondern auch Erfindergeist die Späth´sche Oase. Unter der Geschäftsführung von Gartenbauingenieur Holger Zahn, der die Anlage bereits seit 1987 wie ein neuer Ziehvater verwaltet, hat sich der Ort in den letzten 30 Jahren ein Stück neu erfunden und möchte seine Gäste nicht nur über seine Geschichte und ein enormes Fachwissen ansprechen, sondern auch gartenkulinarisch verwöhnen. In der historisch geschützten Kernzone des insgesamt 25 Hektar großen Bau- und Gartendenkmals steht ein Schilderwald, der die Vielfalt der Anlage erahnen lässt. Ein Bataillon von über 60 Mitarbeiter hegen und pflegen eine ganze Armee von Blumen, Pflanzen, Bäumen, Sträuchern, Hecken und Gräsern (rund 1.200 Gehölz- und über 4.000 Pflanzenarten).
Baum der Zukunft – Die 100 Jahre alte Späthsche Erle
Vor über 100 Jahren wurde die „Späthsche Erle“ als besonders resistenter Baum aufgezogen. Lange vergessen wurde er im Rahmen einer wissenschaftlichen Versuchsreihe der Humboldt-Universität wiederentdeckt und zum „Baum der Zukunft“ für Großstädte gekürt.
Die Skulpturen des Südtiroler Künstler Franz Christanell aus Meran erzählen Geschichten. Im Skulpturengarten werden Gartengeräte und Werkzeuge zu Tieren, Totems und Fabelwesen. Durch seine „Kunst für den Garten“ führt der Künstler meist selbst vor Ort.
Blumige Terrasse des Hofcafés
Das Hofcafé ist mit seiner 360 ° Grad Sichtachse der zentrale Ausgangspunkt. Er führt zu einer gärtnerischen Peripherie, die nichts auslässt. Im Kräutergarten „Kräuter, Kunst und Krempel“ findet man neben „Aus aller-Welt-Kräuter“ auch zahlreiche Deko-Elemente für Haus und Garten – eine kleine Enklave für sich. Vor dem Fertigheckengarten liegt der Skulpturengarten von Franz Christanell, der Gartenmaterial zu Kunst-Artefakten transformiert. Das „Haus aus Bäumen“ (Eschen) dient als Theater oder kann für Hochzeiten gebucht werden. Seit 2016 gibt es den 400 qm großen Gräser- und Natursteingarten mit 150 Ziergräsersorten, Schilfen oder Strandroggen. Das Späth-Arboretum und der frühere botanische Garten der Unternehmerfamilie Späth wird von der Humboldt-Universität für wissenschaftliche Zwecke betrieben.
Kräutergarten „Kräuter, Kunst und Krempel“
Nach dem Gang durch die Späth’sche Pflanzenwelt ist der kulinarische Zwischenstopp im Hofcafé Späth mit Terrasse und einem Hofladen mit regionalen Spezialitäten zu empfehlen. Über den Sommer stellen (Winzer aus deutschen Anbaugebieten im „Späth´en Weingarten“ vor dem Café immer donnerstags bis sonntags ab 15 Uhr ihre Weine aus nachhaltig-ökologischer Anbau vor. Bei der Verkostung stehen sie Weinliebhabern für ein Gespräch zu Verfügung.

Spitzensortiment der Winzer und leichte Sommerweine
Die Gäste erwarten vorzügliche Winzerweine von Weingütern aus verschiedenen Anbauregionen in Deutschland. Mit dabei sind das Weingut Nickel aus Franken, Weingut Ritter von der Nahe, Weingut Scharfbillig von der Mosel, Weingut Koch aus Rheinhessen, Weingut Jonas aus dem Rheingau und das Weingut Waldkirch aus dem Markgräfler Land. Die passenden kulinarischen Köstlichkeiten serviert das Hofcafé Späth. Der Späth’sche Hofladen bietet leckeren Bio-Käse und Bio-Wurst als Delikatesse zum Wein. Schmackhafte Flammkuchen kommen auf den Tisch. Kräutergarten und Gräsergarten, Skulpturen- und Fertigheckengarten, Rhododendron- und Hortensiengarten locken ebenfalls zum Besuch. Die blaue Märchenhütte ist geöffnet. Das Späth-Arboretum bittet zum Spaziergang unter hohen Bäumen.
Ausserdem lädt die Späth’schen Baumschulen am Weinfest-Wochenende zur Pflanzenschau „Staudensommer bei Späth“ ein.
Die Stauden aus eigener und regionaler Produktion sind am 26. Juli bis 18 Uhr und am 27. Juli bis 14 Uhr zu sehen (mit Verkauf).
