Berlin Atonal gilt als eines der weltweit wichtigsten Festivals für experimentelle Musik, Videokunst und mediale Experimente. Es hat sich seit seiner Neugründung im Jahr 2013 im Kraftwerk etabliert, einem stillgelegten Heizkraftwerk im Herzen Berlins. Zum Festival im Jahr 2017 sind über 100 Künstler/innen aus den Bereichen Musik, Klangkunst, Film, Animation, Medientechnik, Malerei, Installation und interaktive Medien eingeladen, ihre Arbeiten zu präsentieren. Die Beiträge reichen von Skulpturen und Installationen über audio-visuelle Performances, raumspezifische Interventionen in Architektur, Licht und Sound bis hin zu Vorträgen und Workshops. Zum Auftakt des Festivals präsentiert das Ensemble Modern zwei neue Stücke, für die es erstmals in Berlin das von dem Komponisten Karlheinz Stockhausen entworfene Oktyaophonische Soundsystem verwendet. Für eine weitere große Produktion ist der Komponist Roly Porter eingeladen. Er arbeitet mit den mathematischen Strukturen des Tons und hat Pionierarbeit geleistet bei der Modellierung biologischer Prozesse wie Zellenwachstum für kompositorische Zwecke. Für Atonal 2017 entwickelt er eine gemeinsame Komposition mit dem srilankesischen Komponisten Paul Jebanasam, welche die Eigenheiten beider Künstler berücksichtigt und sie verbindet. Gemeinsam mit japanischen Partnern entsteht zum Festival 2017 das Programm New Assembly, welches Berlin Atonal in Asien und vor allem in Japan vorstellen soll und einzelne Atonal-Produktionen nach Tokio bringt.
