Im Vorfeld der IGA 2017 fanden auf dem Erweiterungsgelände der „Gärten der Welt“ 2013/14 archäologische Grabungen statt. Die dabei gemachten Befunde beweisen, dass dieses Gelände mindestens seit der Bronzezeit besiedelt war. Ausgegraben wurden verschiedene Arten von technischen Öfen, die vermuten lassen, dass hier zeitweise das Werkareal einer nahe gelegenen germanischen Siedlung war. Zudem kamen Keramik und Getreidekörner sowie Schmuckgegenstände und ein Spielstein ans Tageslicht. Auch der Zweite Weltkrieg hat seine Spuren in Form unterschiedlicher Metallgegenstände hinterlassen. Ausgewählte Funde der Grabung werden in der Sonderausstellung erstmals der Öffentlichkeit präsentiert.
