Ab 19. Mai 2017 stellt das provokative Londoner Künstlerduo Gilbert & George Arbeiten aus der Serie Scapegoating Pictures –Sündenbock-Bilder in der St.-Matthäus-Kirche aus. Zentrale Themen sind Religion, Fundamentalismus und Terrorgefahr.

Als „living sculptures“ – lebende Skulpturen – steht das Künstlerpaar Gilbert & George seit den 1960ern für eine differenzierende Haltung zur Religion und Moral.
Ihre Serie ist Teil der Ausstellung „Luther und die Avantgarde“, die anlässlich des Jubiläums „500 Jahre Reformation“ Religion mit zeitgenössischer Kunst konfrontiert. Rund 60 internationale Künstlerinnen und Künstler sind eingeladen. Weitere Standorte neben der St.-Matthäus-Kirche sind das ehemalige Gefängnis in Lutherstadt Wittenberg und die Karlskirche Kassel.

Die Haltung von Künstlern wird heute in einer Welt, in der Begriffe wie Pluralität, Demokratie, Freiheit und Gleichberechtigung auf dem Prüfstand stehen, für unsere Gesellschaft zentraler denn je.“
