Jedes Jahr am Abend des 5. Dezember putzen Millionen Kinder in Deutschland freiwillig ihre Schuhe. Warum sie das tun? Damit der Nikolaus ihnen in der Nacht Geschenke bringt! Doch wer ist dieser heimliche Gabenbringer und wie sieht er aus?

hr kennt das: Die Stiefel blank putzen und vor die Tür stellen und dann heißt es warten. Denn in der Nacht vom 5. zum 6. Dezember legt der Nikolaus kleine Geschenke in unsere Schuhe. Doch warum feiern wir eigentlich Nikolaus?

Den Nikolaus gab es wirklich

Den heiligen Nikolaus gab es wirklich: Er hat vor über 1.600 Jahren in der Hafenstadt Myra am Mittelmeer gelebt – dort, wo heute die Türkei ist. Nikolaus war der Bischof von Myra, also das kirchliche Oberhaupt der Stadt. Er soll ein sehr reicher Mann gewesen sein. Der Nikolaus hat das Geld aber nicht für sich behalten, sondern es an die Armen und die Kinder verteilt. Weil er in seinem Leben viel Gutes für die Menschen getan hat, wurde Nikolaus nach seinem Tod an einem 6. Dezember heilig gesprochen.

Über den heiligen Nikolaus werden viele wundersame Geschichten erzählt. So richtig weiß niemand, wie es zu der Tradition gekommen ist, dass wir am Vorabend des Nikolaustages unsere Stiefel vor die Tür stellen. Und dann – in der Nacht – schleicht der Nikolaus von Haus zu Haus. Heimlich natürlich. Denn er möchte beim Geschenkeverteilen nicht beobachtet werden. Oder habt ihr den Nikolaus schon mal gesehen? Dann wisst ihr vielleicht wie der Nikolaus heute aussieht. Und wie sah er damals vor 1.600 Jahren aus?

Verwechslung mit dem Weihnachtsmann

Obwohl er ja eigentlich ganz anders aussieht, wird der Nikolaus oft mit dem Weihnachtsmann verwechselt. Der bringt die Geschenke allerdings erst am 24. Dezember. Und was unterscheidet die beiden Geschenkebringer sonst noch? „Ich denke, der Weihnachtsmann ist ein bisschen dicker als der Nikolaus“, überlegt Tim. „Der Nikolaus ist vielleicht ein bisschen fauler als der Weihnachtsmann“, vermutet Luci, denn schließlich sind die Geschenke unter dem Baum stets sehr aufwendig verpackt.

Für Andere da sein

Die Geschenke bekommen wir heute nur, weil damals der Bischof Nikolaus sein Hab und Gut mit den Kindern und den Armen geteilt hat. Für Priester Michael Jäger ist deshalb ganz klar, warum wir auch heute noch Nikolaus feiern: Damit auch wir uns darauf besinnen, für andere da zu sein.
