Vor 20 Jahren, am 24. Juni 1999, wurde das Museum Europäischer Kulturen (MEK) gegründet. Es entstand aus der Zusammenlegung der europäischen Sammlung des Museums für Völkerkunde, dem heutigen Ethnologischen Museum, mit den mit den Beständen des Museums für (Deutsche) Volkskunde aus Ost- und Westberlin. Damit ging eine inhaltliche Neuausrichtung einher, hin zu einer modernen, kulturanthropologischen und -vergleichenden Sammlungs- und Forschungstätigkeit mit europäischer Perspektive. Anlässlich seines 20-jährigen Bestehens sowie der jährlich im Mai stattfindenden Europawoche lädt das MEK am Sonntag, dem 12. Mai 2019, zum kostenfreien Nachbarschaftsfest in den Museumsgarten nach Berlin-Dahlem ein. Rund um die Sonder- und Dauerausstellungen wird ein umfangreiches Veranstaltungsprogramm für die ganze Familie geboten.
Unter dem Motto „lebendige Traditionen“ können die Besucher*innen an Führungen und Workshops teilnehmen, sich im Garten mit Kaffee und Kuchen von Eßkultur stärken und mit anderen Gästen austauschen. Zum Abschluss findet ein Konzert mit Geburtstagsständchen statt.
Außerdem können die Besucher*innen in den derzeit laufenden Ausstellungen des MEK die vielfältigen Lebenswelten Europas entdecken. Die Sonderausstellung „Hochzeitsträume“zeigt auf, wie eng unsere Vorstellungen vom „perfekten Tag“ von Traditionen, medialen Bildern, sozialen Erfahrungen und politischen Realitäten geprägt sind. Mit der Sonderausstellung „100 Prozent Wolle“widmet sich das MEK der Kulturgeschichte der Wollproduktion und -verarbeitung. Die Sammlungspräsentation „Kulturkontakte. Leben in Europa“zeigt auf 700 Quadratmetern einen Querschnitt aus den vielfältigen Sammlungen des MEK. Pünktlich zum Nachbarschaftsfest wird die Dauerausstellung durch punktuelle Interventionen unter dem Titel „Die Dinge des Lebens“ erweitert: Berliner*innen haben sich in einem Projekt mit den Objekten der Sammlung des MEK beschäftigt und erzählen ihre ganz eigenen Objektgeschichten, die in der Ausstellung mithilfe von Fotos und Texten sichtbar und erfahrbar gemacht werden.
