Präsentiert wird der skandinavische Weg der Moderne, der sich in einer starken Auseinandersetzung mit der deutschen Moderne und dem Bauhaus vollzog. In den nordischen Ländern entstand eine sehr eigenständige Interpretation des Funktionalismus. Nicht die avantgardistische Form, wie vielfach in Deutschland, stand im Vordergrund, sondern die maßgeschneiderte Lösung für eine Aufgabe. Zunächst sollte die Problemstellung analysiert und erst dann die gestalterische Lösung erarbeitet werden. Der skandinavische Funktionalismus blieb deshalb nicht Avantgarde, sondern wurde, versehen mit nationalen Besonderheiten der jeweiligen Länder, zur identitätsstiftenden Konstante der nordischen Nationen.

Beginnend mit dem finnischen Architekten und Designer Alvar Aalto über den Vater des schwedischen Funktionalismus Sven Markelius und die international gefeierten dänischen Designer Hans J. Wegner und Arne Jacobsen liegt der Schwerpunkt der Ausstellung auf den 50er und 60er Jahren. Neben landesspezifischen Entwicklungen werden Finnland, Schweden, Dänemark und Norwegen übergreifende Themen – Kindheit, demokratisches Design und Hygge – vorgestellt. Den Abschluss bilden futuristische Entwürfe von Verner Panton, Eero Aarnio und Marimekko, die den endgültigen Bruch der nordischen Länder mit dem Funktionalismus markierten. Gezeigt werden rund 150 Werke – Möbel, Grafik, Glas, Textilien –, hauptsächlich von bedeutenden nationalen und internationalen Leihgebern.

Das Thema „Bauhaus“ ist im Bröhan-Museum das ganze Jahr über präsent: Anfang 2019 zeigten wir die Ausstellung „ Von Arts and Crafts zum Bauhaus. Kunst und Design – eine neue Einheit!“. Stand bei dieser Schau der Weg von der englischen Arts-and-Crafts-Bewegung hin zum Bauhaus im Fokus, so beschäftigt sich die Ausstellung „Nordic Design. Die Antwort aufs Bauhaus“ mit der Wirkung der deutschen Moderne auf das Design der nordischen Länder. Das Bauhaus ist dabei nur eines der Projekte der deutschen Moderne, die in den nordischen Ländern diskutiert wurden. Wie die Rezeption der 20er und 30er Jahre zeigt, ist das Bauhaus damals weit von seinem Nimbus als „Leuchtturm“ entfernt, wie es heute gerne dargestellt wird.
