Die Kunstbibliothek der Staatlichen Museen zu Berlin präsentiert anlässlich ihres 150-jährigen Bestehens noch bis zum 10. Februar 2019 eine kulturelle Entdeckungsreise der besonderen Art. Mit der groß angelegten Jubiläumsausstellung „ABC des Reisens“ können sich Besucher durch ihre Sammlungsbereiche Architektur, Buchkunst, Fotografie, Grafikdesign und Modebild navigieren.
Das Jahr geht zu Ende und man gönnt sich eine wohl verdiente Auszeit. Manche geniessen es sich nicht mehr von Ort zu Ort bewegen zu müssen und bleiben einfach ganz ruhig zu Hause. Andere begeben sich im allgemeinen Reisetumult zu verstreuten Familienmitgliedern ans andere Ende der Republik. Die wohl Glücklichsten sind vielleicht die, die sich auf eine Reise in ihr ganz persönliches Sehnsuchtsland begeben, um dem Feiertagstrubel ganz zu entgehen. Wer das Reisen durch die schönen Künste liebt, dem sei das „ABC des Reisens“ als eine Ausstellung durch Raum und Zeit in der Kunstbibliothek empfohlen. Die feierte 2018 ihr 150-jähriges Bestehen und zelebriert dies mit diesem ganz wunderbaren Reigen durch eine Welt voller Bewegung und 1001 sehr unterschiedlich interpretierte Eindrücke.
Ursprünglich Teil des Kunstgewerbemuseums, das 1868 Räume in Berlins Mitte bezog, verfügt die Bibliothek heute neben einer großen Sammlung an Fachliteratur auch über bedeutende Bestände grafischer Bildzeugnisse aus den Bereichen Architektur, Buchkunst, Fotografie, Grafikdesign und Modebild. Die Jubiläumsausstellung dreht sich ganz um das Thema „Reise“ – ein zentrales Motiv in Literatur und Kunst, das auch die Bestände der Kunstbibliothek in unterschiedlichsten Formen durchzieht. 250 ausgewählte Exponate stellen ein faszinierendes Reise-Panorama vor – von mittelalterlichen Pilger-reisen nach Jerusalem, über humanistische grand tours, voyages pitto-resques des 17./18. Jahrhunderts und Expeditionsreisen im Kolonialzeitalter, bis hin zum plakativ beworbenen Massentourismus des 20. Jahrhunderts.
Auch medial zeigt sich ein breites Spektrum: Zeichnungen, Veduten und Reiseskizzenbücher aus der Architektursammlung treffen auf rare Buch-drucke aus der Bibliothek und multimediale Varianten von Reisealben. Die Fotografie bewegt sich zwischen Souvenir und Dokumentation, während die Sammlung Modebild neben Drucken, Entwürfen und Fotos zu Reisemoden auch mit Trachtenbüchern und Karikaturen aufwartet. Im Grafik-design ist das Thema „Reisen“ in Plakaten, Broschüren, Speisekarten, Kofferaufklebern, Reklamemarken und anderen Alltagsdrucksachen vertreten. Die Sammlung Buchkunst ergänzt die Präsentation mit Illustrationen, skulpturalen Objekten und einem filmischen Reise-Tagebuch des Konzeptkünstlers Marcel Broodthaers von 1973.
Stets ist es dabei das Bild, das im Mittelpunkt der Betrachtung steht. Denn Reise-Bilder aus angewandten Kontexten stellen nicht nur Orte und Er-lebnisse dar oder demonstrieren die Kunstfertigkeit ihres Produzenten – vielmehr sprechen sie Bände über die Epoche, in der sie entstanden sind. Sie geben einerseits Auskunft über praktische Realitäten des Reisens wie Transport, Unterkunft, Moden und Möglichkeiten.
Wie und für wen wird Wissen über „das Fremde“ definiert und erlangt, wie wird es verbreitet? Welches gesellschaftliche Selbstverständnis prägt welche Reiseform? Wo und wann wird Reisen politisch, ist es Luxus oder Banalität? Wie verhalten sich Reisebilder und -berichte zu Weltvorstellungen und globalem Denken? Und warum versteht sich jede Epoche seit dem 17. Jahrhundert als das neue „Zeitalter des Reisens“?
Die Ausstellung präsentiert sich als ein „ABC des Reisens“: Entlang des Alphabets werden Exponatengruppen zentralen Begriffen zum Reisen – von A wie Album bis Z wie Ziel – zugeordnet. Unter B wie Bericht etwa findet sich ein Reisebericht von Jaques de Bourges‘ China-Reise 1671. Theodor de Brys „America“ (1596) und Franz Hogenbergs „Civitates orbis terrarum“ (1618) gehen als frühe Landkarten unter C wie Cartografia einen Dialog mit Plakaten der 1920er-Jahre ein. Dem topografischen Ansatz stellt N wie Nationen ein Ordnungssystem nach regionalen Typen entgegen, in dem barocke Spielkarten, Trachtenbücher des 17. Jahrhunderts und Bilderbögen nationale Erscheinungsbilder visualisieren. Wie sich Reisen mit verkehrstechnischem Fortschritt und Mobilität verknüpft, zeigen grafische und fotografische Werke rund um D wie Dampfschiff, E wie Eisenbahn und F wie Flugreise. In T wie Tourismus fangen Reiseplakate von 1880 bis heute Sehnsuchtsmotive ein, während erfundene Reisen eines Münchhausen oder bei Jules Verne im Blickpunkt von I wie Imagination stehen.
Während der Ausstellung können Besucherinnen und Besucher im oberen Foyer der Kunstbibliothek auf eine Anzahl von Künstlerbüchern zugreifen, die sich mit realen oder fiktiven Reisen befassen. Zudem wird der Künstler Flavio de Marco ausgehend von seinem Künstlerbuch „Stella“, einem fiktiven Reiseführer zum idealen Urlaubsziel, Fenster und Vitrinen bespielen. Im unteren Foyer stellt eine Präsentation zur Geschichte der Kunstbibliothek ihre Sammlungen und Häuser, Akteure und Aktivitäten der letzten 150 Jahre vor. In der Dauerausstellung des am Kulturforum benachbarten Kunstgewerbemuseums wird die Reise mit einem Parcours zu besonderen Objekten wie einem tragbaren Altar, einem Reisehut oder einer Souvenir-Vase fortgesetzt.
„ABC des Reisens“ ist eine Sonderausstellung der Kunstbibliothek-Staatliche Museen zu Berlin und wird von einem vielfältigen Veranstaltungsprogramm mit Führungen, Lesungen und Künstlergesprächen begleitet.
