An der Barnimstraße in Friedrichshain, nördlich des Alexanderplatzes, befand sich von 1868 bis 1974 das zentrale Berliner Frauengefängnis. Hier saßen viele politische Gefangene ein, Rosa Luxemburg war wohl die prominenteste. Während der Nazi-Diktatur mussten dort Widerstandskämpferinnen die Zeit bis zu ihrer Hinrichtung verbringen. Am 30. Mai 2015 wurde mit dem „Hörweg durch das Berliner Gefängnis für Frauen in 5 politischen Systemen“ von Christoph Mayer chm. der neue Gedenkort „Frauengefängnis Barnimstraße“ eröffnet.
Ein Projekt von christoph mayer chm., FHXB Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg Museum, Paul Singer Verein und dem Bildungsträger BUF, unterstützt von der Senatskanzlei Kulturelle Angelegenheiten – Kunst im Stadtraum und dem Hauptstadtkulturfonds.
