Das unter Denkmalschutz stehende Gebäude bietet dem Theater eine einzigartige Atmosphäre, die zusammen mit der Qualität der aufgeführten Stücke für die Popularität des Schauspielhauses verantwortlich ist. Vom Krieg als einziges Palais verschont, fanden bereits 1945 erste Konzert- und Tanzveranstaltungen in den Räumlichkeiten statt, die das Haus in Berlin und Umgebung bekannt machten. Von 1950 bis 1990 diente das Palais als zentrales Haus der Deutsch-Sowjetischen Freundschaft, bevor es 1991 zur neuen Spielstätte des Theater im Palais wurde. Seitdem hat sich das Theater zur festen Institution in Berlin entwickelt und bereichert durch seine Veranstaltungen die Kulturszene der Hauptstadt.
