Ella Fitzgerald gilt als bekannteste und einflussreichste Stimme des Jazz, als First Lady of Song. 12 Grammys, drei Oktaven Stimmumfang, 200 Plattenaufnahmen und über 50 Jahre Präsenz auf der Bühne sprechen für sich. Am 25. April huldigt der Wintergarten der Königin des Jazz mit einer Hommage anlässlich ihres 100. Geburtstages. Mit dabei sind Uschi Brüning, Della Miles, Queen Yahna, Bettina Labeau, Janice Harrington sowie Andrej Hermlin and his Swing Dance Orchestra.  


Sie trat zusammen mit Frank Sinatra auf, sang Duette mit Louis Armstrong und spielte mit Cole Porter und Oscar Peterson. Ihre volle Stimme reichte nicht nur über drei Oktaven, sondern bewältigte auch mit Leichtigkeit größte Intervallsprünge. Durch ihre musikalische Fertigkeit, ihre schnelle Auffassungsgabe und ihre Herzlichkeit beeindruckte sie ihr Publikum mit ihrem leidenschaftlichen, enormen Ausdruck – und oft überraschenden Eigenwilligkeiten und Improvisationen. Ob schmeichelnd-leise Töne oder vollmundig-basslastige Jazzballaden, ob lebhafte und rasante Improvisationen oder kichern, plappern, krächzen – ihr Antrieb, ihre Motivation war immer die Liebe zu ihrem Publikum.

Ella Fitzgerald war eine eindrucksvolle Frau mit ladyhaften, aber auch mädchhaften Zügen – bis ins hohe Alter. Bei dem legendären Amateurwettbewerb im Apollo Theater von Harlem begann Ella Fitzgeralds fast sechs Jahrzehnte andauernde Karriere. Als 17-Jährige wollte sie bei dem Wettbewerb eigentlich als Tänzerin auftreten. Doch dann schlotterten ihr die Knie so sehr, dass sie spontan mit dem Song „The Object of My Affection“ auftrat und den ersten Preis gewann. Die „Lichtgestalt des Jazz“ erlebte nicht nur die wichtigsten Entwicklungen in der Geschichte der Jazzmusik, sondern prägte sie – insbesondere den Scatgesang, in dem mit Silben und Wortfragmenten lautmalerisch instrumentale Abschnitte nachgeahmt werden. Ella Fitzgerald verstarb 1996 im Alter von 79 Jahren an Diabetes, doch ihre Stimme ist unvergesslich und fasziniert uns bis heute.

Uschi Brüning gilt seit den siebziger Jahren als die führende Jazzsängerin Deutschlands. Ihr Wirkungskreis erstreckt sich von literarischen Chansons über Blues, Gospel, Swingstandards bis zur Improvisation im modernen Jazz.

Della Miles
Della Miles ist Singer und Songwriter. Sie wurde in Houston geboren und sang bereits mit 3 Jahren im Gospelchor. Als Background-Sängerin von Marius Müller-Westernhagen ging sie auf Tour. Heute ist sie erfolgreiche Solokünstlerin mit kraftvoller, unverwechselbarer Stimme.

Queen Yahna
Die vielseitige und charismatische Künstlerin Queen Yahna wurde in Philadelphia geboren. Das musikalische Talent ist ihr in die Wiege gelegt: Sie wuchs in einer Familie von Sängern und Musikern und als Tochter des Bischofs J.W. Dennison mit spiritueller Musik auf. Schon als zweijährige stand sie stundenlang auf dem Küchenstuhl und sang. Ihr musikalisches Talent verwirklichte sie erst nur als Musiklehrerin, bis sie 1989 Andrej Hermlin und seiner Swing Dance Band begegnete und ihre Sängerin wurde.

Janice Harrington
Die nordamerikanische, vielseitig talentierte Künstlerin Janice Harrington ist Jazz-, Blues- und Gospelsängerin, Produzentin und Schauspielerin. Sie stand mit Künstlern wie Billy Daniels, Lloyd Bridges, Frank Sinatra Jr., Sammy Davis Jr. und Lionel Hampton auf der Bühne. Lionel Hampton sagte einmal über Janice Harrington, sie sei eine „One-Women-Show“.
