Einen Einblick in das Liedschaffen von drei der größten US-amerikanischen Komponisten gibt der erste Abend von Lieder und Dichter in der neuen Spielzeit. Mit ganz unterschiedlichen Mitteln gelang es Aaron Copland, Samuel Barber und Charles Ives, einen spezifisch amerikanischen Ton zu finden und dem Lied eine neue Welt von Klangfarben und Gefühlsstimmungen zu erschließen. Das wird im Programm des Abends besonders deutlich, wenn diesen amerikanischen Liedern ein Meisterwerk englischer Spätromantik gegenübergestellt wird: die 1899 entstandenen „Sea pictures“ von Edward Elgar.
Mit Ronnita Miller, Meechot Marrero und Thomas Lehman singen drei Native Speaker aus dem Ensemble der Deutschen Oper Berlin, begleitet von John Parr am Klavier. Zu Gast ist die Dichterin Uljana Wolf (geb. 1979 in Berlin), deren Werk einen nicht geringen Teil seiner Kraft aus dem Zusammentreffen zweier Sprachen bezieht, dem Deutschen und dem Englischen. Aus „falschen Freunden“, gleichlautenden Worten unterschiedlicher Herkunft, entsteht bei Wolf ein poetischer Überschuss, der in der deutschen Gegenwartslyrik seinesgleichen sucht.
Klassisches Kunstlied und moderne Lyrik: Die Veranstaltungsreihe in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Haus für Poesie vereint Liederabend und Dichterlesung. An jedem der vier Abende im Foyer der Deutschen Oper wird ein Dichter eigene Werke vorstellen, die in inhaltlichem Bezug zu den Liedern des Programms stehen.
