Leuchttürmen und Feuerschiffen auf der Spur: Anlass der Sonderausstellung ist das 100-jährige Jubiläum des preußischen Seezeichenversuchsfeldes in Berlin-Friedrichshagen. Originale Exponate wie Glasoptiken und Messgeräte sowie Archivalien und Fotografien beleuchten auf knapp 70 Quadratmetern die Entwicklung des deutschen Seezeichenwesens.

Seezeichen dienen nicht nur der Orientierung und Positionsbestimmung auf dem Meer, sondern auch der Warnung vor Gefahren. Man unterscheidet zwischen natürlichen Zeichen wie Gestirnen oder Silhouetten von Küsten und künstlichen Zeichen wie Leuchttürmen, Baken, Tonnen oder Feuerschiffen. Ihre Signale sind optisch, akustisch oder funktechnisch. Mit dem erhöhten Schiffsaufkommen im 19. Jahrhundert stieg der Bedarf an sicherer Orientierung entlang der Küsten. Die Ausstellung zeigt die Entwicklung der optischen Signale von Öllampen über das Gasfeuer bis hin zu elektrisch betriebenen Lichtquellen und den heute weit verbreiteten, sehr hellen, energiesparenden und langlebigen LEDs. Der Einsatz von reflektierenden Spiegeln, lichtbrechenden Glaslinsen, Farben und in einem bestimmten Takt wiederkehrendem Licht veranschaulicht die stetige Ausdifferenzierung des Seezeichenwesens. So ermöglichten unterschiedliche Farben und Takte des Lichts die individuelle Kennzeichnung von Leuchttürmen und verbesserten die Wegeleitung.

Mit der Eröffnung des preußischen Seezeichenversuchsfeldes im Jahr 1913 am Müggelsee bei Berlin entstand eine Forschungsstelle ersten Ranges für Seezeichen. Hier wurden unter anderem die Qualität von Leuchten und Glas geprüft und festgelegt sowie Neu- und Umbauten von Anlagen getestet. Initiator des Versuchsfeldes und Erneuerer des deutschen Seezeichenwesens war der Referatsleiter Walter Körte (1855-1914). Er trieb die Entwicklung einheitlicher Zeichen und Standards durch seine Kontakte zur Industrie und den anderen deutschen Anrainerstaaten voran. Bis zum Ersten Weltkrieg entstand so ein wirksames System fester und schwimmender Seezeichen für den Tag- und Nachtbetrieb. Nach 1918 lag eine wichtige Aufgabe in der Absprache auf internationaler Ebene. Die Sonderausstellung zeigt die Entwicklung dieser staatlichen Institution von ihren preußischen Anfängen bis hin zur heutigen Dienststelle in Koblenz.
