Da die Hütte, in die er sich zurückzieht, auf dem Weg zum fürstlichen Landsitz liegt, dauert es nicht lange, bis Büttel der Stadt bei ihm auftauchen, um ihn zu vertreiben. Da aber geschieht etwas Seltsames. Als man hört, wer er ist, wird man höflich und zieht wieder ab. Und vom nächsten Tag an kommen ständig Besucher und bringen Geld und Geschenke. Offenbar glaubt man in der Stadt, dass der junge Mann seine Hütte nicht zufällig an dem Weg errichtet hat, den Miyamoto Musashi zweimal am Tag beschreitet, sondern in dem ehrenvollen Ansinnen, den übermächtigen Musashi für den Tod des Vaters zum Duell zu fordern.
Shugoro Yamamoto (bürgerlich: Satomu Shimizu, 1903–1967), ging nach der Volksschule in die Lehre bei einem Pfandleiher, dessen Namen er später als Pseudonym verwendete; sein schriftstellerisches Debüt gab er 1926 mit dem Roman Sumadera fukin (In der Nähe des Sumadera); Nihon fudoki (1942–1946) wurde für den Naoki-Preis nominiert, den Yamamoto allerdings – wie alle folgenden Preise auch – ablehnte. Yamamoto hinterließ ein umfangreiches Werk; viele seiner Romane und Erzählungen wurden für die Bühne adaptiert oder verfilmt, u.a. von Akira Kurosawa; er ist Namensgeber des Yamamoto- Shugoro-Literaturpreises. Die Rache ist die erste deutsche Übersetzung eines seiner Werke.
