Der „Internationales Theaterinstitut“ -Kongress in Wien proklamierte 1961 den „Welttheatertag“ und bestimmte den traditionellen alljährlichen Eröffnungstag des Festivals „Theater der Nationen“ in Paris, den 27. März, zum Welttheatertag. Unerwartet entwickelte sich dieser zu einem weltweiten Erfolg.
Botschaften aus aller Welt zum Welttheatertag
International bekannte Theaterleute wurden um „Botschaften“ gebeten, in denen sie sich mit der Bedeutung und dem Wirkung der Bühnenkunst im gesellschaftlichen Zusammenhang auseinandersetzen. Die internationalen Botschaften zum Welttheatertag werden jedes Jahr in mehr als fünfzig Sprachen übersetzt und überall in der Welt vor Theateraufführungen oder speziellen Veranstaltungen zum Welttheatertag verlesen.
Veranstaltungen am Welttheatertag
In aller Welt finden zahlreiche Veranstaltungen rund um Theateraufführungen statt. In Deutschland öffnen die Theater ihre Häuser zum „Tag der offenen Tür“, veröffentlichen die internationale Botschaft und laden zu Ausstellungen und Publikumsgesprächen. Besonders die Theater für Kinder und Jugendliche nutzen die Gelegenheit, ihrem Publikum einen Blick hinter die Kulissen und den direkten Kontakt zu den Künstlern zu bieten.

Das deutsche Zentrum des ITI vergibt zudem traditionell einen Preis zum Welttheatertag, mit dem herausragende Persönlichkeiten des Theaterlebens in Deutschland ausgezeichnet werden soll. ITI Preis 2016 ging an den schweizer Autor, Theater- und Filmregisseur Milo Rau. Der diesjährige Preisträger ist noch nicht bekannt.
