Friedrich Kiesler, geboren 1890 in Czernowitz, gestorben 1965 in New York, war ein austro-amerikanischer Architekt, Bühnenbildner, Designer, Künstler und Theoretiker. Sein die Grenzen der einzelnen Kunstgattungen sprengender künstlerischer Ansatz, sein Konzept eines endlos fließenden Raumes und seine ganzheitliche Designtheorie des Correalismus zählen zu den großen Visionen des 20. Jahrhunderts und erfreuen sich ungebrochener Aktualität. Darüber hinaus war Kiesler eine zentrale Figur im Netzwerk der Aesthetic Community in New York, und sein Freundeskreis liest sich wie ein Who-is-Who der Avantgarde.

Der Martin-Gropius-Bau widmet dem Universalkünstler Friedrich Kiesler eine Ausstellung, in der das vielschichtige Œuvre in all seinen Facetten erstmals auch in Deutschland vorgestellt wird. Anhand zentraler Projekte, wichtiger Künstlerfreundschaften und Gemeinschaftsarbeiten wird auch sein Umfeld skizziert, seine Bedeutung für die Architektur- und Kunstgeschichte des 20. Jahrhunderts aufgezeigt.

Berlin ist hierfür als Ort geradezu perfekt: Es ist die Stadt, in der Kiesler mit einem elektro-mechanischen Bühnenbild für Karel Čapeks „W.U.R. (R.U.R.) Werstands Universal Robots“ 1923 am Theater am Kurfürstendamm seinen ersten großen Erfolg feiert und im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes auf die Bühne der Avantgarde springt. Ein Jahr später sorgt er in Wien mit der Ausstellungsgestaltung für die von ihm auch kuratierte „Internationale Ausstellung neuer Theatertechnik“ und seiner „Raumbühne“ als zentrales Ausstellungsstück ein weiteres Mal für Furore. 1925 wird er von Josef Hoffmann eingeladen, die österreichische Theatersektion für die „Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes“ in Paris zu gestalten. Diesen Auftrag nutzt er, um seine Zukunftsvision einer frei schwebenden Stadt, die Raumstadt, modellhaft als Ausstellungsstruktur zu präsentieren. 1926 geht er nach New York, um ein weiteres Mal eine „International Theatre Exposition“ zu organisieren.

Kiesler verlässt Europa mit avantgardistischen Projekten im Gepäck. Mit großen Erwartungen angekommen, bleiben sie anfänglich unerfüllt. Seine Ideen scheinen zu avantgardistisch für die Neue Welt. Kiesler arrangiert sich rasch mit der harten Realität im New York der 1920er Jahre und findet in der Gestaltung von Schaufenstern und Geschäftslokalen ein erfolgreiches Betätigungsfeld. Mit dem Film Guild Cinema entwirft Kiesler 1929 in New York das erste 100% Cinema, eine Ikone der modernen Kinoarchitektur, die mit zusätzlichen Projektionen an die Seitenwände und Decke des Auditoriums ein frühes Beispiel der Virtual Reality darstellt.

Kiesler arbeitet in den 1930ern an Möbel- und Lampenentwürfen und errichtet 1933 in den Schauräumen der Modernage Furniture Company in New York das „Space House“, seine Vision eines Einfamilienhauses, als 1:1 Modell. Viele Kernthemen der Kiesler’schen Entwurfs- bzw. Architekturtheorie, vor allem sein Konzept einer „Raum-Zeit-Architektur“, werden hier erstmals formuliert.

1934 beginnt Kiesler nach einer zehnjährigen Unterbrechung wieder für das Theater zu arbeiten. Mit dem Bühnenbild für George Antheils Oper „Helen Retires“ gelingt ihm ein erfolgreicher Einstand in der New Yorker Theaterszene, der zu einem Engagement an der Juilliard School of Music führt. An die 60 Ausstattungen entstehen dort während seiner 25-jährigen Lehrtätigkeit. Mit dem „Woodstock Theater“ (1929) und dem „Universal Theater“ (1959-62) schafft Kiesler zwei Prototypen multifunktionaler Kulturspielstätten, die allerdings nur als Modelle realisiert werden.

Von 1937 bis 1941 leitet Friedrich Kiesler das Laboratory for Design Correlation an der Columbia University in New York und entwickelt seine Correalismus-Theorie, einen ganzheitlichen Designansatz, der auf wissenschaftlicher Analyse gründet und in dessen Zentrum der Mensch steht. Im Zuge seiner Forschung beschäftigt sich Kiesler intensiv mit der menschlichen Wahrnehmung und entwickelt die „Vision Machine“, mit deren Hilfe er das menschliche Sehen als einen aktiven Prozess visualisieren möchte. Diese Studien bilden die Grundlage seiner späteren Ausstellungsgestaltungen. Im Laufe der 1940er Jahre arbeitet Kiesler außerdem an zwei umfangreichen Buchprojekten – einer Publikation seiner Designtheorie des Correalismus und an einer Kulturanthropologie der Architektur mit dem klingenden Titel „Magic Architecture“. Beide Schriften bleiben unpubliziert.

Zur selben Zeit gestaltet Kiesler mehrere spektakuläre Ausstellungsräume: Peggy Guggenheims Galerie „Art of This Century Gallery“ die „Russian American Exhibition“, eine „Hall of Ecology“ im American Natural History Museum, die Ausstellung „Bloodflames 1947“, sowie die „Exposition Internationale du Surréalisme”. Sie alle zeugen von seiner engen Beziehung zu den Surrealisten im New Yorker Exil. Kiesler ist ein Künstler für Künstler. Der Austausch sowie die Zusammenarbeit mit Künstlerkollegen waren für ihn von größter Bedeutung. Ganz besonders gilt dies für Marcel Duchamp. Kiesler veröffentlicht den ersten Artikel über Duchamps „Großes Glas“ in einer amerikanischen Zeitschrift („Architectural Record“, 1937), Duchamp wohnt ein knappes Jahr im Apartment der Kieslers, gemeinsam spielen sie Schach, teilen das Interesse an den Naturwissenschaften, technischen Innovationen und an den Wirkungsweisen der menschlichen Wahrnehmung. Sie arbeiten an Ausstellungen und gestalten Zeitschriften. Nach einem Streit innerhalb der Surrealistengemeinschaft in New York trennen sich jedoch ihre Wege.

Aus Teilen des surrealistisch anmutenden Bühnenbilds für die Oper „The Poor Sailor“ (Le Pauvre Matelot) von Darius Milhaud fertigt Kiesler ein raumgreifendes Skulpturen-Environment, die sogenannte „Rockefeller Galaxy“, die 1952 in der Ausstellung „15 Americans“ im MoMA gezeigt wird. Von dieser Skulptur ausgehend, erarbeitet Kiesler eine weitere „Galaxy“-Skulptur für Philip Johnsons „Glass House“ in New Canaan. Es entstehen sogenannte „Galaxy“-Paintings: Cluster von Bildtafeln, die in minutiös definierten Abständen zueinander angeordnet werden, zum Teil an Böden, Wänden und Decken. Der zwischen den einzelnen Bildtafeln liegende Raum, der „Space in Between“, bekommt die gleiche Bedeutung wie die Malerei selbst.

Kiesler behauptet stets, dass jeder „eine gestalterische Grundidee hätte“ – für ihn selbst könnte die Arbeit mit dem „Raum“ als solche bezeichnet werden. Der Raum, insbesondere der endlos fließende Raum, zieht sich als Kernthema durch Kieslers Œuvre. 1950 schafft er erstmals ein kleines eiförmiges Modell für ein „Endless House“. Im Laufe der 1950er Jahre verfeinert er dieses Konzept und erhält 1958 ein Stipendium, um im Skulpturengarten des MoMA ein 1:1 Modell eines „Endless House“ zu errichten. Wenngleich die Realisierung scheitert, zählt es unbestritten zu den Ikonen visionärer Architektur des 20. Jahrhunderts.

Das einzige tatsächlich realisierte Gebäude Kieslers wird 1965 in Jerusalem eröffnet: der „Shrine of the Book“, den Kiesler gemeinsam mit Armand Bartos plant. Das symbolisch stark aufgeladene Bauwerk – es beherbergt alttestamentarische Schriftrollen, die am Toten Meer gefunden wurden – sowie die nicht ausgeführte „Grotto for Meditation“ in New Harmony, Indiana, zeugen vom großen Interesse an sakralen Räumen in Kieslers Spätwerk.

In den Jahren 1964/65 arbeitet Kiesler an großen Environments, die er aus einzelnen, aus Aluminium oder Bronze gegossenen Skulpturen zusammensetzt. Sowohl seine Skulptur „Bucephalus“, eine Referenz an das Streitross Alexander des Großen, als auch das große Environment „Us, You, Me“ vereinen das gesamte Schaffen Kieslers. Die begehbare Skulptur „Bucephalus“, ein kleines „Endless House“, mythologisch und symbolisch aufgeladen, theatralisch mit Soundeffekten ausgestattet, stellt gewissermaßen eine Summe all seiner früheren Projekte dar. Kieslers bildhauerische Projekte sind heute kaum bekannt und können in der Ausstellung im Martin-Gropius-Bau erstmals als wesentlicher Bestandteil seines umfangreichen Schaffens entdeckt werden.
