Als Maler war Ai Weiwei Mitglied der einflussreichen Pekinger Künstlergruppe der Stars. Während seiner New Yorker Zeit (1982 bis 1993) entwickelte er sich zu einem Konzeptkünstler, erweiterte seine Arbeit um fotografische Praktiken und verwandelte gefundene Objekte in surreale Skulpturen. Rund umrahmt von der Skyline Manhattans zeigt dieser Scherenschnitt einige seiner frühen New Yorker Arbeiten, darunter Three Clothes Hangers as a Star (1983) und Safe Sex (1986), einen Regenmantel, den Ai mit einem Ring perforierte, durch den ein Kondom heraushing, „weil damals alle eine solche Angst vor AIDS hatten“.

Furniture

Antikes Holz ist eins von Ais typischen Ausgangsmaterialien. Er transformiert die traditionellen Objekte in neue, surreale Formen, nimmt ihnen damit ihre ursprüngliche Funktion und verleiht ihnen zugleich eine neue Identität. Haircut

Hier reflektiert Ai Weiwei seinen Beitrag für die documenta XII in Kassel (2007), als er 1.001 chinesischen Landsleuten, die ihr Land noch nie verlassen hatten, eine Reise in die deutsche Stadt ermöglichte. Für diese Arbeit (Fairytale) wählte er Menschen aus allen Lebensbereichen aus, gestaltete ihre Kleidung, ihre Koffer und – wie hier zu sehen – auch die Haare. Die Teilnehmer konnten sich frei bewegen und tun, was sie wollten, solange sie die Stadt nicht verließen, um damit sowohl Betrachter als auch Teil eines Kunstwerks zu sein. Ebenfalls zu sehen ist die monumentale Außeninstallation Template, konstruiert aus Holztüren und Fenstern von abgerissenen Gebäuden aus den Ming- und Qing-Dynastien, die nur wenige Tage nach Eröffnung der documenta bei einem Gewitter in sich zusammenfiel. „Das Werk war nicht auf das deutsche Wetter und den Wind vorbereitet“, sagte Ai. „Ich sah, wie die Anlage einstürzte – oder besser gesagt: eine andere Gestalt annahm – und dachte: Jetzt ist sie wirklich eine Ruine. Sie ist aus Ruinen gebaut und jetzt ist sie selber eine.“

Citizens‘ Investigation

Am 12. Mai 2008 erschütterte ein Erdbeben der Stärke 7,9 die chinesische Provinz Sichuan. Die Zahl der Toten lag bei fast 70.000, darunter Tausende von Schulkindern. Die Komposition zeigt Menschen inmitten der Trümmer: eine Frau, die ein Bild von ihrem vermissten Kind hochhält, Helfer und Ermittler auf der Suche nach Opfern und Überlebenden. Als die chinesische Regierung Informationen über die Identität der Opfer zurückhielt, organisierte Ai ein Team von Freiwilligen, das den Fall untersuchte und eine Liste der verstorbenen Kinder zusammenstellte – ein Projekt, das als Citizens‘ Investigation bekannt wurde. Es stellte sich heraus, dass viele Schulen aufgrund von Korruption gegen die offiziellen Sicherheitsstandards verstoßen hatten und deshalb eine Mitschuld am Tod vieler Kinder trugen. Im Jahr 2009 trat Ai Weiwei als Zeuge für Tan Zuoren auf, einen Aktivisten und Schriftsteller, der das Erdbeben ebenfalls in Hinblick auf Korruptionsfragen untersucht hatte. In der Nacht vor dem Prozess wurden Ai und seine Mitarbeiter in ihren Hotelzimmern von der Polizei angegriffen und bis Prozessende festgehalten. Im Jahr 2008 boten die Shanghaier Behörden Ai Weiwei den Bau eines Ateliers an, um den kulturellen Sektor der Stadt zu stärken. Zodiac

Der vom italienischen Jesuiten Giuseppe Castiglione für den Hof des Kaisers Qianlong (1711–1799) entworfene Zodiac-Wasserbrunnen war berühmt für seine kostbaren Bronzeskulpturen der zwölf Tiere des chinesischen Tierkreises. Der Brunnen wurde zerstört, als britische und französische Truppen während des zweiten Opiumkrieges 1860 den Palast plünderten und Ruinen hinterließen, die in einem öffentlichen Park bis heute erhalten sind. Von den Tierköpfen existieren noch sieben, die meisten davon in westlichen Sammlungen. Für seine Installation Circle of Animals / Zodiac Heads, die unter anderem in New York und Los Angeles zu sehen war, reproduzierte Ai Weiwei die zwölf Köpfe in Bronze und Gold. Die fünf verlorenen Häupter (Drache, Schlange, Widder, Hahn und Hund) entwarf er neu und stellt damit Fragen nach Authentizität und kultureller Aneignung. „Sind sie wirklich verloren, oder im Auktionshaus?“ fragt Ai nach dem Verbleib der Originale. „Vielleicht tauchen die fehlenden Tierkreisköpfe ja im nächsten Jahr auf. Mal sehen, wie sie dann im Vergleich mit unserer Version abschneiden.“

Ai Weiwei, geboren 1957 in Peking, ist bekannt für seine klaren künstlerischen Aussagen zu drängenden geopolitischen Fragen unserer Zeit. Von Skulpturen und Installationen über Architektur bis hin zu Dokumentationen und Social Media nutzt er eine Vielzahl von Medien, um die Gesellschaft und ihre Werte auf immer neue Weise zu hinterfragen. Er ist Träger des von Amnesty International vergebenen Ambassador of Conscience Awards 2015 und des Václav-Havel-Preises für kreativen Dissens der Human Rights Foundation 2012. Ais abendfüllender Dokumentarfilm Human Flow feierte Premiere im Wettbewerb der 74. Filmfestspiele in Venedig. Derzeit lebt und arbeitet er in Berlin.
